The 24 Hours of Le Mans is famous partly because it isn’t a single race between identical cars, it’s several races happening at once, separated by class. Two of the most important are Hypercar and LMP2, and they represent very different philosophies.
Hypercar: The Outright Fight
Hypercar is the top class at Le Mans and in the wider World Endurance Championship, home to manufacturer-backed prototypes fighting for overall victory. These cars run under a technical framework designed to allow different engineering approaches, including hybrid and non-hybrid designs, to compete on relatively even terms through a balance of performance system.
LMP2: A Cost-Controlled Proving Ground
LMP2 sits below Hypercar and uses a more standardized set of chassis and engine options, keeping costs lower and competition tighter between teams that couldn’t otherwise afford a Hypercar program. It’s also historically served as a stepping stone for drivers and teams aiming to eventually reach the top class, similar to how feeder categories function across other racing disciplines.
Balance of Performance
Because Hypercar allows multiple different technical approaches, organizers use a balance of performance system, adjusting factors like minimum weight and power output, to try to keep manufacturers competitive with each other despite their differing designs. This system is reviewed and adjusted between events based on real performance data, and it remains one of the more debated aspects of modern endurance racing.

With multiple classes on track together, teams have to navigate traffic constantly, and reading how to pass slower class cars safely, especially at night, is a core skill for endurance drivers. This layered class system lets endurance racing showcase cutting-edge manufacturer technology at the top while keeping a broader, more affordable competitive field active beneath it, all racing on the same piece of tarmac at the same time.
