Tyres are the single point of contact between a race car and the track, and how they wear over a run is one of the biggest hidden variables shaping strategy across nearly every racing series.
Two Kinds of Degradation
Tyre wear generally falls into two categories: thermal degradation, where the rubber compound overheats and loses grip, and physical wear, where the tread simply erodes away with use. Different track surfaces and driving styles stress these two factors differently, which is why the same tyre compound can behave completely differently at two different circuits.
Why Drivers Manage Pace Deliberately
Because pushing too hard early in a run can accelerate degradation, drivers often deliberately manage their pace, especially in the middle portion of a stint, conserving tyre life for when it matters most, whether that’s defending a position late in a race or pushing for an overtake once traffic clears.
Track Evolution Complicates Things Further
Track surfaces themselves change over a race weekend as rubber builds up from cars running laps, generally increasing grip as an event progresses, up to a point. This means a tyre’s behavior isn’t just about the tyre itself, but about the surface it’s interacting with at that specific moment in a race weekend.
Strategy Built Around the Cliff
Many tyres exhibit a sudden, sharp drop-off in performance once wear crosses a certain threshold, often called hitting the cliff. Teams use extensive data modeling to predict when that cliff will arrive for a given compound and set of conditions, timing pit stops to avoid running a tyre past that point wherever possible.
Why This Matters Across Every Series
Whether it’s a Formula 1 team debating a one-stop versus two-stop strategy or a NASCAR crew judging when their tyres have gone off during a long green-flag run, tyre degradation modeling has become one of the most consequential, if least visible, parts of modern race strategy.
