At IndyCar’s fastest superspeedways, drafting is one of the most important skills a driver can master, turning aerodynamics into a tool for overtaking rather than just an obstacle to it.
The Basic Physics of the Draft
When a car follows closely behind another at high speed, it experiences reduced air resistance because the lead car has already punched a hole through the air. This reduced drag allows the trailing car to run at a similar speed while using less throttle, banking extra pace that can be spent on a pass.
The Slingshot Pass
Drivers use this saved energy to pull out of the draft and complete a slingshot pass, surging past a rival right before a corner using the momentum built up while sheltered behind them. Timing is everything, since pulling out too early loses the draft benefit, and too late leaves no room to complete the move.
Pack Racing Dynamics
On the largest ovals, this creates large multi-car packs running close together at extreme speed, similar to what fans see in tightly contested championship battles like the ones described in Alex Palou’s title-winning IndyCar season, where small drafting advantages compound into race-defining position changes.
The Risk Side of Drafting
Running in close proximity at 220 mph carries real risk, since a single mistake by any car in a pack can collect several others before anyone can react. Drivers have to balance the benefit of the draft against the increased danger of running that close for extended periods.
Why It Makes Superspeedway Racing Different
Drafting rewards patience and timing over raw speed alone, which is why some drivers who aren’t the fastest in qualifying can still win superspeedway races by playing the draft perfectly in the closing laps.
