Why BoP Exists
Without some kind of equalizing system, a class combining a variety of manufacturer GT cars would simply be won by whichever car happens to have the best raw specifications, regardless of driver skill or team execution. BoP aims to shift the competitive emphasis back toward the people racing rather than the hardware alone.
How Adjustments Are Made
Series organizers analyze performance data from practice, qualifying, and previous races, then adjust factors like minimum weight, turbo boost pressure, fuel tank capacity, and aerodynamic ride height for each specific car model heading into an event.
A Constantly Shifting Target
Because BoP is recalculated regularly, sometimes even between sessions at the same event, a car that dominated one race weekend might find itself with a slightly heavier ballast the next time out, which keeps competition close across a season even as raw car specifications remain fixed.
Controversy and Debate
BoP decisions are frequently debated by teams and fans, especially after close finishes at events like those covered in Frankie Muniz’s GT4 America win, where questions about whether a particular manufacturer was over or under-balanced can shape the storyline of an entire race weekend.
Why It’s Necessary Despite the Criticism
Even with its imperfections, most GT racing series consider BoP essential to keeping grids diverse, since without it, manufacturers with the most resources would simply out-develop everyone else, narrowing the field to a handful of dominant cars.
