Count the Sundays. In 2026, IndyCar’s third Sunday of July belonged to Nashville Superspeedway. In 2027, it belongs to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where the inaugural INDYCAR Grand Prix of Barcelona is set for July 18. Nobody involved has said one replaced the other. The calendar, unfortunately, doesn’t need anyone’s permission to look suggestive.
What’s confirmed, and what isn’t
IndyCar released Phase Two of its 2027 schedule on October 23, completing a 17-race season that FOX will carry from start to finish. Nashville isn’t on it. Neither is the Freedom 250 Grand Prix that ran through Washington, D.C., in August. The Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix’s own website says the 2027 schedule is “now confirmed without an event in Nashville,” thanks the fans, and credits partners from downtown Nashville to the Superspeedway. What it doesn’t offer is a reason, a contract status, or a road back. Everything past that is paddock chatter, and chatter stays out of this story.
The D.C. absence is the easier one to read. IndyCar tied that race to the 250th anniversary of American independence, Kyle Kirkwood won it (we covered how), and the series reported 3,282,000 viewers for the broadcast. It simply isn’t on next year’s list. Barcelona is the only new event IndyCar named in the Phase Two release.
Barcelona didn’t start as a vacancy notice
By Mark Miles’ own account, the Barcelona deal began with a call from the circuit, not the other way around, and turned into roughly four months of talks. It’s a multiyear agreement that Miles suggested could run about a decade, and it makes Barcelona the series’ first race outside North America since São Paulo in 2013 and its first in Europe since Assen in 2007. He also floated the track as a possible home base for IndyCar in Europe. That isn’t how anyone describes a stopgap for a missing oval.
Do the arithmetic, though. Four months before an October 23 announcement lands in late June, weeks before Nashville Superspeedway hosted its 2026 race. That’s a timeline, not an allegation. It does mean Spain was a live conversation while Nashville was still an upcoming date on the 2026 calendar. For what the Catalunya circuit demands of tires and weather forecasts, Michelin’s view from the WEC weekend is worth a read.

One home race traded for another
Here’s the part that stings if you’re from Middle Tennessee. Josef Newgarden, a Nashville native, won the 2025 race at the Superspeedway by 0.5021 seconds over Alex Palou. It was his first win of that season, it ended a 20-race drought, and it was his first at home. In 2026 the script flipped: Palou led the final 95 of 225 laps and beat Newgarden by 0.8731 seconds for his first Nashville win. The last two Nashville races were Newgarden-versus-Palou duels, and on the same July weekend next year one of them gets a home crowd while the other gets a long flight.
The commercial logic isn’t crazy. Palou has just won his fifth championship, Barcelona is his hometown, and he has said the race doubles as a home event for more than 10 European drivers. But call it what it is: IndyCar has given its dominant champion a hometown crowd and taken away the home race of one of its best-known American drivers. You can defend that trade. You can’t pretend it’s neutral.
The July math teams will care about
Look at the 2027 stretch: Mid-Ohio on July 4, Barcelona on July 18, Portland on August 1. That’s a fortnight on each side of a transatlantic trip. The 2026 version had Nashville on July 19 and Portland on August 9, three weeks later. Cars and crews that cross the Atlantic must be set up on the Pacific coast 14 days after the checkered flag, a tighter turnaround than this year’s. IndyCar hasn’t published freight plans, so how teams manage it is their problem to solve. The oval-side consequences of losing Nashville are in our earlier breakdown of the 2027 schedule.
What fans and the paddock should watch
If you’re in Middle Tennessee, the closest 2027 race is Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama on April 4, followed by the Indianapolis road course on May 15 and the 111th Indianapolis 500 on May 30. On the Barcelona side, the releases I reviewed don’t specify a race format or a promoter, and IndyCar says tune-in times and the INDY NXT schedule are still to come. And watch whether Nashville or the Superspeedway says anything beyond a thank-you.
One last detail. FOX scheduled Nashville’s 2026 race behind its World Cup final broadcast on July 19. Rain pushed the race to Monday, July 20, so IndyCar’s final Nashville race missed the lead-in. Its next July date is in a soccer country, where the lead-in is built in.
