Unlike car racing, where multiple tyre manufacturers sometimes compete, MotoGP runs on a single tyre supplier, which means every rider faces the same fundamental menu of compound choices. How they use that menu is where races are often decided.
Front and Rear, Separately Chosen
Riders choose tyre compounds independently for the front and rear, typically from soft, medium, and hard options, allowing teams to mix and match based on their bike’s specific characteristics and a rider’s riding style. A rider who’s harder on the rear tyre under acceleration might choose a harder rear compound even while running a softer front for extra initial bite.
Reading Track Temperature
Tyre performance is extremely sensitive to track temperature, which can shift significantly between a Saturday practice session and a Sunday race depending on weather. A tyre choice that felt ideal in cooler morning conditions can degrade rapidly if race-day temperatures climb, which is why teams closely track weather forecasts alongside their own tyre wear data heading into a race.
The Wear Cliff
MotoGP tyres, like most racing tyres, don’t degrade gradually so much as they hold performance for a stretch and then drop off sharply once past a certain wear threshold, often called the cliff. Riders who push too hard early can find themselves suddenly losing significant pace deep into a race, while those who manage tyre life carefully preserve grip for a stronger finish.
Wet Tyres Change Everything
Rain introduces a completely different compound category and a completely different approach to racing lines, braking points, and throttle application.
