NASCAR’s Next Gen car represented one of the most significant technical overhauls in the series’ modern history, changing far more than just the bodywork fans see on television.
A Shared Chassis Approach
Where previous generations of Cup Series cars allowed teams considerable freedom to build and refine their own chassis, the Next Gen car moved toward a more standardized chassis supplied by approved manufacturers, aimed at reducing the cost advantage large, well-funded teams previously held over smaller operations.
Independent Rear Suspension
One of the most significant mechanical changes was the switch to independent rear suspension, a departure from the solid rear axle used for decades in Cup cars. This changed how cars handle through corners and altered setup approaches that crew chiefs had refined over years with the older platform.
Wheels and Tyres
The Next Gen car also introduced larger, wider wheels and a single lug nut per wheel, replacing the traditional five-lug setup.
