No major series is on track today, which makes it a good morning to sort out what the weekend left behind. Everything below was checked against series and sanctioning-body sources.
The storyline that matters: Larson lost a tire and kept the Chase lead
Kyle Larson qualified 22nd, never found speed, then blew a tire on Lap 283 and hit the wall in Turn 1. He finished 34th. He still leads the NASCAR Chase, because nearly everyone around him had an afternoon that was almost as messy.
Tyler Reddick won the Freeway Insurance 500 with a strategy call rather than raw pace: he took two tires on the late caution, grabbed the lead after the Lap 294 restart and held off Ryan Blaney by 0.801 seconds. It was his sixth win of 2026 and his first at Phoenix.

The standings are the real story. Christopher Bell is now five points behind Larson, Chase Briscoe 24, Denny Hamlin 31, Blaney 40 and Joey Logano 44. Six drivers sit within 56 points of the lead with three races to go. A five-point lead is not a lead; it is a rounding error with a trophy case, and the next stop is Talladega, a track that has never respected anyone’s points math.
Penalties and stewards’ decisions
- NASCAR: Hamlin shredded a tire on Lap 221, then was caught speeding on pit road and spent the rest of the day a lap down, finishing 28th. Bubba Wallace led 52 laps and controlled the final stage until a pit-road speeding penalty under Larson’s caution dropped him to 17th.
- Formula 1: Nothing new to report between rounds. The next stewards’ decisions arrive with running at Austin.
Driver changes
TGR Haas F1 Team confirmed Ferrari junior Rafael Câmara as a race driver for 2027 on Oct. 15. He takes the seat Esteban Ocon is leaving; Haas announced Ocon’s departure on Sept. 30, which we covered at the time. The move is cheaper than a veteran and comes with a Ferrari relationship attached, which at Haas is never only a driver decision.

Official announcements
Formula 1 has published the full United States Grand Prix timetable, and the Talladega broadcast window is set for Sunday. Beyond Haas’s driver news, no other official announcements landed this morning.
