Triumph Motorcycles and MotoGP used the week of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone to confirm what Moto2 teams have been expecting since preseason testing began: the 765cc triple that has powered the intermediate class since 2019 is being replaced. A new race engine will take over the Moto2 World Championship starting in 2027, and while Triumph is keeping some of the finer technical details under wraps for now, the broad strokes already say a lot about how the class is about to change.

The headline number is a roughly 6% increase in peak power over the outgoing 765cc unit — modest on paper, meaningful on a bike that already produces some of the closest racing in the sport. Triumph also confirmed the new engine sheds 4.4 pounds (2 kg) compared to its predecessor, and that its displacement will change, though the company has not yet said by how much or in what configuration. Track testing begins in the coming months, with private team running planned ahead of the engine’s competitive debut in 2027.
The specifics Triumph did share point to where the real engineering work happened. The new cylinder head uses a redesigned low-inertia valvetrain paired with higher-flow ports and a revised combustion chamber, changes aimed at getting more air into the cylinders without asking the valves to work any harder to move it. Lighter valvetrain components let the valves open and close faster and more precisely at high RPM, which is what actually unlocks a higher compression ratio and more torque across the rev range, rather than just chasing a bigger peak number on a dyno sheet. Triumph also redesigned the crankcases and internal components to cope with that added output — the unglamorous part of the job, but the part that keeps a race engine alive through a full championship instead of failing in front of a television audience.

None of that is the part that will actually keep chassis engineers up at night. Triumph says the new engine changes where the air intake sits and where the unit mounts in the frame, which means every manufacturer building a Moto2 chassis has to design an essentially new bike around it rather than just dropping a hotter engine into last year’s frame. Triumph says it has spent the past year feeding technical data to those chassis builders so they aren’t starting from zero once 2027 testing ramps up, but a chassis redesign cycle is expensive and slow even with a head start — and it’s the part of this announcement that will hit a Moto2 team’s budget harder than the horsepower figure ever will.
It’s worth remembering why Moto2 can make a change like this in the first place. Since 2019, Triumph has been the class’s sole engine supplier, so every bike on the grid runs the same unit and performance is separated by chassis, electronics, and rider rather than a manufacturer arms race. That’s a very different model from the one MotoGP itself operates under, where rule changes typically require the manufacturers’ own association to reach unanimous agreement before anything changes on track, a dynamic that recently produced its own showdown over the single-bike entry rule. Moto2’s spec-supplier setup means Triumph and Dorna can simply decide to raise the performance ceiling and set a date, without a multi-manufacturer committee fight standing between the announcement and the racetrack.
The timing isn’t a coincidence, either. Moto2’s new engine lands in the same season MotoGP’s own premier class is downsizing, part of a broader push toward closer racing and lower costs at the top of the pyramid. Moto2 sitting one rung down the ladder is getting rebuilt in parallel, which makes 2027 a genuine changeover year across the paddock rather than a single-class update. Formula 1 is living through a comparable moment right now with its own 2026 rules overhaul, and the arguments over whether that reset actually levels the field are a useful reminder that new engine rules rarely land as evenly as the press release promises.
Triumph’s case for the update leans heavily on what the current engine has already proven. The company says its development has drawn on nearly two million kilometers (about 1.2 million miles) of racing data gathered since it took over as exclusive supplier, and that Moto2 competition under the 765cc engine has produced almost 100 all-time and race lap records across eight seasons. More importantly for the sport’s long-term health, Moto2 remains the primary pipeline into MotoGP itself. A disproportionate share of the current premier-class grid came through the intermediate class on Triumph power, which is the real reason Dorna and Triumph are willing to disrupt a formula that has clearly been working.
Triumph chief product officer Steve Sargent framed the engine as another step in a run of incremental gains rather than a wholesale reinvention, pointing to the gearbox updates that preceded it. “We can’t wait to see it on track,” he said of the new unit. MotoGP sporting director Alfonso Cartujo credited the update with keeping the intermediate class sharp as it heads toward a second full decade under a single engine supplier.
For fans, the practical timeline is straightforward. Track testing begins within the next few months, teams get private running time on the new engine before it reaches a grid, and the competitive debut lands in 2027, the same year MotoGP’s own next-generation bikes arrive. Triumph says more technical detail, including the actual displacement change, is coming closer to that debut. Until then, the number worth watching isn’t the 6% power figure. It’s how many chassis manufacturers have a genuinely new bike ready in time, and how much of that development bill gets passed down to Moto2 teams that are already running on tight budgets.
