Few racing series ask as much versatility of their drivers and cars as IndyCar, which runs a single championship across three fundamentally different types of circuits within one season.
Superspeedways and Short Ovals
Oval racing, especially at high-speed venues, emphasizes drafting, aerodynamic efficiency, and managing traffic at sustained high speed, with cars running much closer to full throttle for longer stretches than on other track types. Short ovals demand a different skill set again, rewarding precise car control in tighter, more physical racing.
Road Courses
Permanent road courses feature a mix of high and low-speed corners, elevation changes, and longer straights, testing braking, cornering technique, and race strategy in ways closer to what fans of series like Formula 1 might recognize, while still carrying IndyCar’s own strategic wrinkles like push-to-pass management.
Street Circuits
Street circuits, built temporarily on public roads, tend to be tighter and less forgiving, with concrete walls close to the racing line and less predictable grip levels than a purpose-built track surface. Mistakes are punished more severely here, since there’s often little to no runoff area to absorb an error.
Setting Up One Car for Everything
Because the championship spans all three track types, teams have to develop setups and even different aerodynamic packages specifically tailored to each category, a level of engineering versatility not required in single-discipline series. A team strong on ovals doesn’t necessarily translate that strength directly to street circuits, and vice versa.
Why This Variety Defines the Series
