Rally is one of the only major motorsport disciplines where the competition surface itself changes dramatically from event to event, and the technical differences between gravel, tarmac, and snow rallies go far deeper than just tyre choice.
Gravel: Sliding Is Part of the Technique
On gravel, cars are often deliberately driven in a controlled slide, using the loose surface to help rotate the car through corners rather than fighting against it. Suspension setups tend to be softer, with more ground clearance to absorb ruts and larger stones that build up on the racing line as an event progresses.
Tarmac: Precision Over Slip
Tarmac rallies reward a much more precise driving style closer to circuit racing technique, with less margin for slides and drifts since grip levels are higher and mistakes are punished more severely by unforgiving surfaces close to the road’s edge. Cars typically run stiffer suspension and different aerodynamic setups optimized for grip rather than absorbing rough terrain.
Snow and Ice: An Entirely Different Grip Equation
Winter rallies introduce studded tyres in many categories, along with a driving style built around managing an extremely low and inconsistent grip environment. Reading subtle changes in surface conditions, packed snow versus icy patches versus fresh snowfall, becomes as important as any mechanical setup choice.
Why Teams Specialize by Surface
