Will Brown and Broc Feeney share a garage, a chassis spec, and, on paper, identical Ford Mustangs. Feeney has five wins this season. Brown has none. On Tuesday night, Triple Eight Race Engineering finally found out why: car #888 has spent the entire 2026 Repco Supercars Championship running an engine airflow restrictor fitted 1 millimetre undersized.
A demo part that never got swapped back
The undersized restrictor wasn’t sabotage, and it wasn’t a manufacturing slip on Triple Eight’s side either. According to the team’s own statement, the part was a loaner supplied by Supercars for a car launch event in Geelong back in February, meant strictly for a demonstration. It was never removed. It stayed fitted to Brown’s Mustang through the Perth Super 440 in early August, race 25 of the season, and through Supercars’ scrutineering across eight rounds, before Triple Eight caught it themselves while preparing Brown’s car for the Ipswich round.
Triple Eight has also run the control engine supply contract for every Ford team in the pit lane this season, which made the discovery more embarrassing, not less. The team responsible for certifying performance parity across the whole Mustang fleet had unknowingly been racing one of its own cars out of spec.
Whincup’s statement, unfiltered
Rather than routing it through a press release, team principal Jamie Whincup posted Triple Eight’s full explanation directly from the team’s account:

Whincup pinned the cost at 0.15 seconds a lap, a figure that sounds trivial until it’s set against the results. One pole position and two podiums from 25 races is a rough return for a driver who won the Supercars title two years ago; in the same colours, on the same control-spec hardware, Feeney has five wins. On the current standings Brown sits seventh with 1,365 points, more than 460 behind Feeney’s 1,832. That gap didn’t open in one bad weekend. It accumulated a fraction of a second at a time, corner after corner, for eight rounds, before anyone knew to go looking for it.
Why one millimetre moves lap times
An engine airflow restrictor does exactly what it sounds like: it caps how much air the engine can draw in, which in turn limits how much fuel it can efficiently burn and how much power it can make. Supercars uses control components like this instead of dictating every internal engine part because they’re simple to police and hard to argue with; give every competitor the same size hole to breathe through and horsepower gets equalised at the source rather than chased through pages of a technical rulebook.
A 1mm shortfall sounds trivial next to that, but airflow through a circular restrictor scales with the area of the opening, not its diameter. Shave even a fraction off the bore and the effective airflow drops by a noticeably larger margin than the raw measurement suggests. That’s the physics behind why a gap most people couldn’t spot with a tape measure across a garage turned into a lap-time deficit Triple Eight could actually feel and time.
It also explains how the error hid for so long. Restrictor checks in a control-parts series are typically a fit-and-gauge exercise carried out at random across a field of more than two dozen cars, not a forensic remeasurement of every restrictor before every session. A part that’s out of spec by a margin most gauges won’t flag, fitted to a car nobody had specific cause to suspect, can sit there for a very long time before it gets caught.
An awkward admission for the sport, not just the team
Supercars’ own statement doesn’t dodge the ownership question. The governing body confirmed the restrictor was loaned to Triple Eight for demonstration purposes only at that February launch, that it “subsequently remained fitted to Car 888 through the Perth Super 440,” and that neither side caught it until Triple Eight went looking. Supercars says it’s now reviewing the circumstances and will look at ways to strengthen its technical and operational procedures.
What’s notably absent from either statement is any suggestion that Brown’s results this season will be revisited. Whincup framed it as a conversation to have with Supercars about accountability, not a protest, and that tracks with how control-parts regulations usually handle this kind of thing: a team’s own equipment shortfall, even one traced back to a part the sanctioning body itself supplied, isn’t typically grounds to reopen a season’s results after the fact. Brown’s zero wins and seventh place are likely to stand exactly as recorded, regardless of what caused them.
Ipswich, and what’s actually recoverable
The fix itself is simple: Triple Eight says Brown’s Mustang will run “on parity with the other Mustangs” from the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 on August 21-23, the final round of the Repco Sprint Cup before the Finals. Brown had already been due to switch into the team’s spare chassis for that event, a call made after a difficult Perth weekend and before anyone knew about the restrictor. Ipswich now doubles as both a fresh chassis and, for the first time all year, a genuinely equal fight.
It won’t rewrite the standings. But it does make Ipswich worth watching for reasons beyond the championship math: with the mechanical excuse gone, it’s the first genuinely equal look all year at what car #888 can do against Feeney’s #88. Ford’s 2026 push extends well beyond one Supercars garage, with the same manufacturer backing Red Bull Powertrains’ return to Formula 1 this season, and elsewhere in the sport 2026 has already reshuffled more than one championship picture, IndyCar’s included. Brown’s version of that story just happens to be the one where a spec part, not a driver signing or a rules rewrite, decided who got to actually race for wins.
