On Sunday in London, the Porsche 99X Electric took the grid for the final time in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, and it left the way it arrived at the top of the GEN3 era: as a record holder. Six World Championship titles out of a possible ten make it the most successful single-seater Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG has ever built — a number that says as much about how seriously Weissach treated a sprint-racing electric car as it does about the car itself.
The Résumé
Across four seasons of GEN3 and GEN3 Evo racing, the 99X Electric collected 23 race wins and 22 pole positions, with Pascal Wehrlein doing most of the heavy lifting: two drivers’ titles, ten wins, and ten poles, all in the same chassis. Two customer outfits, Andretti Formula E and Cupra Kiro, ran 99X-based cars alongside the factory team, and that matters more than it sounds like it should — customer-team results are the real proof a manufacturer’s kit works. Factory teams get factory resources; customer teams get whatever’s left over and still have to make it work on race day.
It Didn’t Start That Way
Porsche’s Formula E program launched in 2017, which meant building an entirely new kind of racing department. Porsche Motorsport’s traditional discipline was hybrid prototypes built to survive six-hour-plus endurance races; Formula E asked for the opposite skill set, a sprint car light enough and efficient enough to cover a flat-out race distance on a single, tightly regulated battery. Thomas Laudenbach, Porsche Motorsport’s Vice President, called the 99X “one of the boldest and most advanced cars Porsche has ever built,” and the program’s early years back that up — when Porsche signed on, Formula E drivers still had to jump out of one car and into a second mid-race because a single charge couldn’t cover the full distance.
Results came once GEN3 arrived. Jake Dennis and customer squad Andretti won the 2022/23 drivers’ title in a 99X before Porsche’s own factory car ever managed one; Wehrlein got his first a year later, at the same London finale, in a season that also produced seven wins for the works team. The Manufacturers’ and Teams’ titles followed in 2024/25, once the GEN3 Evo update added a temporary all-wheel-drive system for qualifying duels and race starts.
The Actual Point of the Program
None of that would matter much to Porsche’s bottom line if the technology had stayed on the racetrack. It didn’t. The 99X Electric and the production Cayenne Electric share an unusual amount of hardware philosophy for cars built on completely different platforms: both recover up to 600 kW through regenerative braking, and both cool their electric motors with direct oil rather than a separate water loop, a detail that matters more than it sounds like it should, since oil pulls heat off the windings faster and lets the motor run harder for longer without derating. During pre-season testing in Valencia, Porsche ran the 99X and a camouflaged Cayenne Electric prototype side by side, which read less like a marketing photo op and more like an honest admission that the two programs were feeding each other data. Even the livery tells the same story: Porsche introduced the “Purplesky” and “Shadegreen” colors on the race car in 2024/25 to match the Taycan Turbo GT, its fastest electric road car, replacing the black-white-red scheme the team had raced in for years.
That kind of racetrack-to-showroom transfer isn’t unique to Porsche, and it isn’t limited to electric powertrains, either. Motorsport has always been where manufacturers stress-test hardware before customers ever see it, sometimes with results nobody wants — just ask Lamborghini about the wheel bearing that cost the Temerario a maiden win.
What Takes Its Place
The 99X’s replacement is already built. The Porsche 975 RSE produces 600 kW (816 PS), a 71 percent jump over the outgoing car, along with 150 percent more aerodynamic downforce — numbers that put it in the neighborhood of the fastest single-seaters on the planet, regardless of powertrain. Porsche unveiled the 975 RSE in April 2026 and kept the purple. The stated goals haven’t changed: wins, titles, and a data pipeline back to Weissach’s road-car engineers.
Chasing meaningfully more power without piling on weight is the same fight every race engine builder is having right now, whether the car runs a battery or a fuel tank — Triumph’s incoming Moto2 engine is wrestling with the identical trade-off ahead of its 2027 debut. Formula E isn’t fighting that battle alone, either; Formula 1’s 2026 rules overhaul leans harder on electrical power than any regulation set the series has run before, and the manufacturers who get that balance right stand to gain the same kind of leverage Porsche just spent four seasons building.
For Andretti and Cupra Kiro, the two customer teams that paid real money to run 99X-based cars, the transition to whatever underpins the next generation will be the real test of Porsche’s Formula E commitment. A works team winning titles is expected; keeping customer teams competitive and willing to write checks for the next car is what actually proves the business case. Six titles is a strong sendoff. What Porsche does with the 975 RSE, and whether the road-car payoff scales the way the Cayenne Electric partnership suggests it will, is the more interesting story from here.
