The Drag Reduction System, better known as DRS, is one of the most talked-about pieces of technology in modern Formula 1. It’s also one of the most misunderstood, often described simply as an “overtake button” when the reality is more nuanced.
What DRS Physically Does
DRS opens a flap in the rear wing, reducing drag and allowing a car to reach a higher top speed on straights. Drivers activate it with a steering wheel button, but only within designated DRS zones and only when they’re within one second of the car ahead at a specific detection point.
Why It Was Introduced
Modern F1 cars produce so much aerodynamic turbulence that following closely through corners used to be nearly impossible, since a trailing car would lose front-end grip in the “dirty air” left behind the leading car. DRS was introduced to counteract this, giving a trailing car a temporary straight-line speed advantage to close the gap enough to attempt a pass under braking.
Zones, Not Anywhere
DRS can only be used in pre-defined zones set out before each race weekend, usually on the longest straights where overtaking is already most feasible. Race control can also disable DRS in wet conditions or after an incident, if it’s deemed unsafe to use given the track surface.
Criticism and Ongoing Debate
Not everyone loves DRS. Critics argue it can make overtaking feel artificial, effectively guaranteeing a pass rather than rewarding pure racecraft, especially in cases where the speed differential is large. Defenders point out that without it, many current circuits would produce almost no on-track passing at all given how much downforce contemporary cars generate. Looking Ahead
Future rule changes have periodically revisited how DRS works, including proposals tied to new aerodynamic regulations designed to reduce the wake turbulence that made DRS necessary in the first place. Whether or not DRS survives in its current form, it remains one of the clearest examples of a rule created specifically to solve a side effect of a car’s own design.
